Oncology massage is a specialized form of massage therapy tailored for individuals who are living with cancer or have a history of cancer. This type of massage takes into consideration the unique physical, emotional, and psychological challenges that cancer patients may face, including treatment side effects, pain, and anxiety.

Key features of oncology massage include:

  1. Personalized Approach: Each session is customized based on the client’s medical history, type of cancer, treatment plan, and current physical condition. The therapist may also consider any side effects from treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation.

  2. Gentle Techniques: The massage techniques used are often gentler than those in traditional massage, focusing on relaxation and relief rather than deep tissue manipulation.

  3. Comfort and Safety: The therapist prioritizes the comfort and safety of the client, using a safe space and being mindful of sensitive areas. This may include adjusting the position of the client or using special supports and cushions.

  4. Collaboration with Healthcare Providers: Oncology massage therapists often work in conjunction with the patient's healthcare team to ensure a coordinated approach to care.

  5. Benefits: Research indicates that oncology massage can help reduce anxiety, alleviate pain, improve mood, enhance sleep quality, and promote a sense of well-being. It can also provide a nurturing touch that may help clients feel more connected to their bodies.
