So what is Esalen® Massage?
-
Slow-moving.
"Esalen® Massage was created over 50 years ago in the 1960's at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, before massage became so popular in the U.S. as a therapeutic and healing modality. It is a slow-moving form of massage that borrows from a number of sources, including Swedish massage, Eastern medicine, meditation, gestalt practice, the teachings of Ida Rolf and Moshe Feldenkrais, yoga, polarity massage, and craniosacral work. In the end, an "Esalen Massage" becomes as individual as the therapist administering it."

-
Deeper State of Awareness.
In addition: "Esalen® Massage is characterised by long, sweeping, oiled strokes punctuated by therapeutic, specific work, passive joint movement, and personal connection, to create a deeper state of awareness and energized relaxation in the receiver. The emphasis is less on stimulating physiological processes, than on creating an environment for the receiver to inwardly sense their own body. This holistic process joins body, mind and soul. Bodywork becomes a personal educational journey rather than quick fix."
- Brita Ostrom
-
Integrative Bodywork.
Esalen® Massage is generally received unclothed (with proper draping), allowing for the full effect of the oiled, long strokes and sessions last between 75 and 90 minutes.

Esalen®'s Massage Legacy.
Over the past half century, the Esalen style of massage (an inspired and ever-evolving integration of sensory awareness, healing arts, yoga, tai chi, meditation, bodymind integration and mindfulness) was largely co-created in the late 1960s by four remarkable women: Peggy Horan, Deborah Medow, Vicki Topp and Brita Ostrom.
